SA8000 Social Accountability Certification

SA8000 is an auditable social accountability standard based on international labour conventions and human rights principles. It covers nine elements including child labour prevention, health and safety, working hours, and remuneration. Fusion Certification provides system preparation and audit-readiness support for SA8000 certification.

What is SA8000 Social Accountability Certification?

SA8000 is a voluntary, auditable standard developed by Social Accountability International (SAI), based on ILO (International Labour Organization) conventions, the UN Declaration of Human Rights, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It covers nine elements: child labour, forced and compulsory labour, health and safety, freedom of association and right to collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, remuneration, and management systems. SA8000 is widely required by European and US retailers and brands — particularly in the garment, textile, footwear, and home furnishings sectors — as a condition of supplier approval. Important distinction: SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) is a data-sharing platform, and SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is an audit methodology — neither is a certification standard in the way SA8000 is.

Who Needs It?

  • Garment, textile, and apparel manufacturers supplying to European, US, or UK brands requiring ethical sourcing compliance.
  • Footwear, accessories, and home furnishing manufacturers in export supply chains with social compliance requirements.
  • Suppliers to retailers (H&M, Primark, Marks & Spencer, Walmart) that include SA8000 or equivalent social standards in their supplier codes of conduct.
  • Indian manufacturers engaged in factory social audits (SMETA, BSCI, Higg FEM) seeking a recognised certification to complement audit programmes.
  • Companies building ESG credentials that include verifiable social and labour rights management systems.

How Fusion Helps

1

SA8000 Gap Analysis: We assess your current HR policies, payroll practices, health and safety arrangements, and worker rights provisions against each of the nine SA8000 elements.

2

Policy & Procedure Development: We develop or update the required policies — child labour prevention, non-discrimination, health and safety, grievance mechanism, and supplier code of conduct.

3

Worker Grievance Mechanism: We design a confidential worker grievance and communication channel that meets SA8000 requirements and is genuinely accessible to all workers.

4

Health & Safety Baseline: We conduct a baseline health and safety assessment and help address gaps in PPE, emergency procedures, chemical handling, and welfare facilities.

5

Management System Setup: We establish the SA8000 management system elements — policy communication, training, performance monitoring, corrective action, and stakeholder engagement.
