RoHS Compliance
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is an EU Directive that restricts the use of specific hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Any Indian manufacturer exporting electronics, PCBs, wiring, lighting, or electrical appliances to Europe must demonstrate RoHS compliance before their products can legally enter the EU market. What is RoHS Compliance?
RoHS — the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (EU Directive 2011/65/EU, commonly referred to as RoHS 2, with RoHS 3 amendments under Directive 2015/863/EU) — restricts the use of ten specific hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) placed on the EU market. The restricted substances include lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP) added under RoHS 3. The Directive applies to a broad scope of EEE categories including large and small household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics, lighting equipment, electrical tools, medical devices, monitoring and control instruments, and automatic dispensers. RoHS compliance is required alongside CE Marking for the affected EEE categories — the CE Mark on an electronic product implicitly includes a RoHS declaration. Non-compliance may result in market withdrawal, regulatory action, and reputational damage. The manufacturer must maintain a Technical File demonstrating conformity, including material composition evidence and test reports from accredited laboratories.
